It’s one of the last warm days of summer, and I’ve caught some kids getting a cheap thrill in Leschi. One after another, with giggles and shouts, they’re jumping from the pier next to the harbor into Lake Washington.
Over and over, the scene repeats. Giggle, shriek, jump into the water, swim to the dock, run back and do it again. What a fun sight.
Leschi Park has a boat launch, boat moorage and a dock that’s popular for swimming. Cross the street and you’ll find another large section of park. Manicured gardens, some very tall trees, a tennis court, play field and trails.
Leschi Park may have been a campsite for Chief Leschi of the Nisqually tribe. After a controversial murder conviction, he was hung in 1858. Read more about Chief Leschi.
In 1889, the site was turned into an amusement park that featured a casino and a zoo.
But, today’s entertainment at Leschi Park is much simpler. Giggle, shriek, jump, swim, run, repeat.
