Address: Westlake Ave. N. and Aloha St.
Acreage: 12

There’s been a lot of buzz in the past year about the new Lake Union Park under construction in the South Lake Union neighborhood, so I thought I’d check it out. But walking by the park, I couldn’t even find the entrance due to the construction chaos.

The plans for this park are so cool, it’s kind of a disappointment to visit right now when so little of the park is accessible to visitors. You can reach the waterfront through the potholed gravel driveway, and it’s fun to watch the boats and seaplanes taking off. You can also walk along the pier and see some historic boats. But that’s about it for park perks until the whole thing is complete in 2010.

A preview of some of the things to come:
* Waterfront boardwalk
* Pedestrian bridge suspended over water
* Large open lawn
* Salmon habitat
* History trail
* Model boat pond

A $20 million capital campaign is making this possible on top of some park funds and Pro Parks Levy dollars. I’m looking forward to coming back next year to see what the all the fuss is really about.
