Sam Smith Park is a really cool use of public space. This park floats over parts of I-90 in an area sometimes called the “I-90 Lid.”
Great trails for biking, walking and running connect this park to several other nearby parks, including Jimi Hendrix Park and Judkins Park.
You’ll find interesting art incorporated into the path that leads toward the I-90 tunnel. Turn off the path before you reach it, and you’ll find a kids play area in one direction and tennis courts in another. At another end of the park is an off-leash dog park that used to be a detention pond.
In case you’re wondering about Sam, he was the first African American person on Seattle City Council. He also served for years in the Washington State legislature.
