Genesee Park looks like a large, flat meadow sitting below the hills that divide the Rainier Valley from Lake Washington. This park creates a nice connection of greenspace making it possible to walk in parks almost continuously between the busy Rainier Ave. S. and Lake Washington Boulevard.
This is a popular place to walk dogs on the trails, as well as run them loose in the off-leash area. Lots of soccer fields, a playground and picnic areas round out the amenities.
Here’s an interesting fact for you. This area used to be a low-land slough and was filled in with garbage beginning in 1947. Unfortunately, it took so long to complete that it led to a nice resident population of rats and seagulls who thought the park was a free buffet.
Genesee means “beautiful valley” to the Seneca Native Americans. It’s a pleasant-looking park to enjoy today if you don’t think too hard about what’s under your feet.
