Location: South Seattle
Address: 2200 Martin Luther King Way S.
Acreage: 4.3
What great timing that I get to write about this park the week leading up to Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.
This four-plus-acre park in South Seattle was built in the early 1990’s on a sloped site. I like the view from the top, which lets you take in the large sculpture jutting out of a fountain sitting about half-way down the hill. You’ll also have a nice view of Beacon Hill and the Rainier Valley.
The impressive 30-foot-tall sculpture was designed by the late Robert Kelly to inspire images of Martin Luther King’s “I’ve been to the mountain top” speech. Get close to read the words in the tiles near the fountain.
Martin Luther King, Jr. made only one visit to Seattle. It was Nov. 8, 1961 and included speeches at the University of Washington and Garfield High School. Can you imagine being a student in class at Garfield that day and witnessing that speech?
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park would be a lovely place to spend a few quiet moments reflecting next Monday.
