With these long, warm days, the lakefront parks that ring Lake Washington have been drawing me in this summer. I can’t resist checking out as many as possible–and sneaking in a swim.
Waverly Beach Park in Kirkland has been one of my favorite spots for years, mostly because it is so little known outside of its neighborhood. Even taking the steep driveway into the park makes you feel like you’re trespassing on some special spot. But, this public park is open to all and has plenty to offer.
The guarded swimming beach is mostly rocky, but wide steps make it easy for even little kids to wade in. More serious swimmers can enter from the dock and get in some decent laps across. The dock circles the swimming area and also has a little section that juts out further into the lake, which is a good spot for fishing or taking in the views.
A wooden play structure, swings and metal train engine toy make up the playground and is located close to the beach. There’s also plenty of lawn–some of it shaded–for picnics and lounging.
