It’s the time of year when I start longing for warm summer evenings spent by the waterfront. So I thought I’d share one of my favorites spots from last summer, where I’m hoping to return many times this year.
Located a couple of blocks southwest of Bellevue Square, Meydenbauer Park is unusual in its long and narrow shape. It stretches underneath an overpass so you can actually drive over the park along Lake Washington Blvd. N.E. before swinging around and entering down the long driveway on 98th Ave. The park’s short paved paths have good accessibility and lead down into the main lakefront area of the park. You’ll notice right away how lush and green the park is, and its trees, shrubs and lawns are meticulously maintained (as is typical for Bellevue parks).
Did you know that passenger ferries used to cross Lake Washington from the Eastside to Seattle in the early 1900s? As you look out at the water, ponder this.. the park was the site of one of the ferry launching points.
The highlight in the summer is a guarded swimming area where people were swimming laps even late into the evening on my visit. (Guarding hours are usually noon-7 p.m.) The dock is popular with fishing and sunbathing. A small play area and sandy beach are ideal for kids.
Near the water you’ll find grass and picnic tables… perfect for a sunset dinner by the lake.
