One of the best walks in Seattle starts at Magnolia Park at the south end of the Magnolia neighborhood. Just be prepared to share it with tour buses.
You can start your outing at the park with a picnic and views of Elliott Bay and West Seattle. You’ll find plenty of picnic tables, barbecues and even a covered shelter. There’s also a tennis court and a set of swings.
Follow the park’s trail out to the road and then pick up Magnolia Boulevard West. Your head will swing back and forth, alternately drooling at the gorgeous old homes on your right and the sensational view on your left. Tall red-trunked madrona trees that line the road are losing their leaves, creating almost a science-fiction setting.
Occasional benches along the boulevard are situated to take in the best views. Stop for a break, or–if the tour buses are disturbing your peace–press on toward Discovery Park for a more solitary experience.
