Sometimes kids (and parents) get tired of their neighborhood playground. On days like that it’s fun to check out elementary school playgrounds, which are open to the public after school hours.
Lafayette Elementary School in West Seattle’s Admiral neighborhood has one of the largest and most fun school playgrounds I’ve seen. Bring bikes and scooters because the grounds has large open areas perfect for whizzing around and even a short path that loops around the grass field.
Two play areas are set up in separate areas. The largest has two play structures–one a climber with slides and the other resembling a pirate ship. Parents will like that several benches ring this play area.
Another play area includes a zip line and other challenges for older kids. The asphalt has games painted on in bright colors including a labyrinth, a world map, hopscotch and four square. Several basketball hoops are lined up along one wall, too.
If you want to extend your Admiral neighborhood visit, cross the street to the Hiawatha Playfield.

You can’t play baseball or softball on asphalt.
It’s not ideal, but my kids (and many others) do it!
