What’s 163 million years old and sitting quietly in a north Seattle residential neighborhood? The Wedgwood Rock!
Not technically a park, but in the right-of-way strip between the curb and a sidewalk in Wedgwood, this glacial erratic is one of the biggest in the state. It’s 19 feet tall and massive in girth. According to geologists, it was carried on an ice sheet from Fidalgo Island at least 15,000 years ago.
The rock used to be popular for picnicking and even rock climbing. Today it is illegal to climb, but it still gets plenty of visits by folks interested in geology, although many Seattle residents have never seen it. That included me until today.
