I bet you’ve never seen a dump this fancy. The North Transfer Station, as it prefers to be known, has undergone a giant ($108 million) renovation. The building is supposedly top-of-the-line with reduced odor and more capacity. But, check out the park outside!
This cool public space wraps around the facility with paved, accessible walking paths winding among a rock swale, newly planted trees and shrubs and sections of beautiful lawn. A half-basketball court (and lines for four-square) are tucked up against the building, which also has a green roof. A half dozen fitness stations are placed in cozy circles along the path with stretching, cardio and strengthening equipment for adults.
Then, cross N. 35th St. for another section of park that includes a great playground, more paths and a pair of picnic tables with peek-a-boo views of Lake Union.
If you want to continue to explore, walk around to the front of the facility on N. 34th St. and examine Jean Shin’s bright orange sculpture constructed of rebar.
