I’m on a quest to find all the best public plazas in downtown Seattle. Most are tucked between or behind relatively new office or residential towers. Some are on public land but have spaces that are open to the public.
On the west side of the second-tallest building in Seattle, you’ll find this lovely public space. Formerly called the WaMu Tower Plaza (after the building’s past resident) and now sort-of nameless, this is a two-story mini park in the middle of downtown Seattle. Start on 2nd Avenue and explore some public artwork. A piece titled New Archetypes dominates with large silver cylinders spilling out horizontally across the paved plaza and then stacked up toward the sky.
Have lunch in the sunshine at one of the sets of tables and chairs, then climb the fancy staircase to a smaller (and quieter) upper section, which has an exit onto Seneca St. Because it is part of a privately owned complex, the plaza bursts with perfectly maintained flowers and shrubs.
Stay tuned for more great examples of small but worthy public spaces!
